Dropshipping on eBay: what’s allowed, and what gets listings removed

eBay allows dropshipping from wholesale suppliers but not from other retailers. Here is the line, why it matters, and how to source and list safely.

Dropshipping, where a supplier sends the item straight to your buyer, is allowed on eBay. But one popular version of it isn’t, and listings built that way are removed and can put an account at risk.

The line eBay draws

  • Allowed: buying from a wholesale supplier who ships directly to your buyer.
  • Not allowed: listing an item, then buying it from another retailer or marketplace, such as Amazon, and having them ship it to your buyer.

Either way, you’re the seller. Delivery times, the item’s condition and returns are your responsibility, and they count towards your seller standards.

Why retail arbitrage goes wrong

  • Buyers receive another retailer’s packaging and invoice, and complain.
  • The retailer’s stock and price change without warning, so you sell what you can’t supply at a profit.
  • Delivery promises are someone else’s, so late shipments land on your record.

Supplier content is a second risk

Copying a supplier’s title, description and photos is quick, but it causes takedowns of its own. Photos often carry watermarks or belong to a brand. Descriptions carry brand names and claims you can’t back up. Write your own words, and use your own photos where you can.

Sourcing and listing safely

  1. Buy from wholesalers or hold the stock yourself, and keep the invoices.
  2. Rewrite titles and descriptions in your own words.
  3. Check every listing for brand names, claims and copy wording before it goes live.
  4. Watch your suppliers’ prices and stock, and pause listings before you sell what you can’t send.
  5. Set handling times that include your supplier’s dispatch time.

Check a listing’s wording with our free takedown word checker. In SellerDesk, listings imported from Amazon are held back until you confirm you hold the stock or buy it wholesale, and imported products are watched for price and stock changes. See how listing checks work.
